IDW Publishing
Comic Book Trailer Series

Client: IDW Publishing
Role: Motion Designer (Freelance)
Deliverables: Full-length trailer, teaser cutdowns (vertical & horizontal formats), audio design

Project Overview

Working with IDW Publishing, one of the leading and most respected comic book publishers based in Los Angeles. I was tasked with bringing their illustrated stories to life through dynamic, engaging trailers.

showcase the tone, narrative, and excitement of a comic book in a 60-second video experience that functions much like a film trailer. These pieces aren’t just ads; they’re designed to spark curiosity, energize long-time fans, and convert casual viewers into readers. My role involved translating static comic panels into visually kinetic sequences that hint at the storyline, set the mood, and create a cinematic atmosphere without giving too much away.

The Challenge

3D CAMERA COMPOSITION IN AFTER EFFECTS

Creative Approach

To bring IDW’s vivid comic art to life, my workflow combines both technical precision and creative interpretation.

3d camera composition in After Effects

The process starts by deconstructing static panels and preparing them for motion, this involves cleaning, cutting, and sometimes redrawing elements to separate characters, foregrounds, and backgrounds while preserving the integrity of the original art style.

Tools I used in the pipeline include: Photoshop – for prepping artwork, cleaning up assets, isolating layers, and making any necessary redraws or paintovers. After Effects – as the core animation tool, used for creating dynamic movement, parallax effects, camera animations, and integrating sound. Moho (Anime Studio) – occasionally used for character rigging and more complex bone-based animations when a scene called for more expressive gestures.
